Embracing Vulnerability in Creative Pursuits

“I spent a lot of years trying to outrun or outsmart vulnerability by making things certain and definite, black and white, good and bad. My inability to lean into the discomfort of vulnerability limited the fullness of those important experiences that are wrought with uncertainty: Love, belonging, trust, joy, and creativity to name a few.Brene Brown

The most powerful and transformative experiences I have had to date, always involved me first resisting, then becoming and finally embracing vulnerability. This isn’t an easy thing to do, but every instance of getting vulnerable has brought me to a new level of personal growth and realization.

The first thing I always want to do after a period of growth is reflect on lessons learned and where it led me, in the simple acts of creating and connecting. Over the years, that has often taken form in writing, painting, cooking, photography, and great conversation with others just to name a few.

I used to shy away from sharing anything about my creativity publically. The things that inspire, the process, techniques, struggles, wins, emotions involved and what it means to me.  But over the last couple years, I’ve intentionally started to share more and more, not with the aim of ego, but to inspire, get feedback and honestly, to hold myself accountable.

I’ve been overwhelmed with the extreme amounts of personal growth and community support, with every instance of getting vulnerable by creating and sharing what I do with an open heart.

From there, I decided to make a business out of my craft, which in it’s self is a big creative pursuit. The vulnerability continues everyday, and it isn’t always easy- but it is so worth it to live openly and honestly, knowing that there may be even one other person who is impacted by it in a positive way.

Life has it’s ups and downs, but we could never know the light without the darkness, lessons learned without having made mistakes, health without illness, relaxation without stress, or beauty without knowing ugliness.

Life is about growth and leveraging what our experiences have taught us.
